He stowed the chest in its hiding place. As he slid the box deep into the niche, he glimpsed the pile of whitish stones clumped against the wall. In the dark of the hole, he couldn’t see the spots of blood. But he knew they were there, and it bothered him still that Pugs had ever gathered those stones. Someday, he thought, he’d take them out and throw them in the ocean to the deep, cool grave where they belonged.

Chapter 15

It was Liam’s idea that they spend the night in Boston. Vanessa, he said, would be more than glad to put them up. Her place was big with bedrooms to spare. They could spend the night on Saturday, and on Sunday they could walk around and see the city’s sights. Harley was unsure at first.

“I don’t know,” he mumbled. “I think I’d feel weird at Vanessa’s place.” He’d met her twice. One of those faded beauties Liam was always drawn to. Tall. Long hair. Decidedly unmaternal. She stood at open windows to smoke her hand-rolled cigarettes.

“You’ll hardly see her. I promise you.” Liam was already on the phone.

Harley knew why his father was pushing the Boston plan. The other night at Red Legs’s he’d heard the whispering of the girls under the roar of the Red Sox game. He’d found it funny, that secrecy. Did they really think he didn’t know about the wedding on Saturday? Liam had reached Vanessa. His back was turned, but Harley could hear his quiet voice, setting his proposal out. He was probably right; the Boston trip was a good idea. The wedding would happen anyway, but at least he wouldn’t hear the bells ringing from St. Brendan’s Church. When he got back, Mairin would be Mrs. Smits and the whole thing would be signed and sealed.
